7 Exorcisms in Panama

TRUE CRIME TUESDAY: E1

Tonight, we have decided to try something a little different than usual. We know there are a lot of true crime fans out there. Heck, I myself am included among the fans!! So, why not share a truly bizarre case that is a mixture of paranormal, Uncommon goodness…and crime. So, without further ado…we present the first ever episode of True Crime Tuesday.

*Creepy Music*

The word exorcism is derived from the Greek language, meaning “binding oath”. According to the united state conference of catholic bishops, an exorcism is, “…a specific form of prayer that the Church uses against the power of the devil.” But you may have already known that from some popular movies with the same title. Within the catholic church their exists two kind of exorcisms, minor or simple and major. The first being simple ritual prayers before a baptism or for children, and Major being…well you guessed it…for big problems spiritually, specifically demonic possession. This last form is reserved for & directed "at the expulsion of demons or to the liberation [of a person] from demonic possession". Exorcisms are serious business, within the catholic church and within the spiritual, paranormal societies. The veil between the power of good and evil can often become too thin to distinguish and intervention by priests or bishops may become necessary.

So why all this talk of exorcism you might ask? What if I told you not one, not two, not even three but 7 people were killed in an expected exorcism. You might say I was crazy! But it’s true. In January of 2020 BBC News reported that, “The bodies of seven people were been found in a mass grave in an indigenous area of Panama where members of a religious sect were believed to be performing exorcisms…” When I first saw this bizarre and macabre headline I thought, no I KNEW…I NEEDED to know more. Tragically the victims included a 32 year old woman (who was with child) and her five children ranging from 1 to 11 years old. The seventh victim a 17 year old neighbor! Exorcisms are intended to help, not kill people. So clearly something other than prayer was occurring there. While the process can be fairly exhaustive, death is extremely rare and should not happen! So, what was really going on in Panama?

At a local hospital 3 individuals turned up desperately needing treatment, when they did, they alerted the authorities to some darker activities occurring within their village. This led to a raid by police and what they found was more than they ever bargained for!

A religious sect called the “New Light of God” had moved to the area about 3 months prior to the incident. The sect established their church and began performing rituals on people against their will. According to the BBC interview, one of the officers who arrived on scene said, "They were performing a ritual inside the structure. In that ritual, there were people being held against their will, being mistreated. All of these rites were aimed at killing them if they didn't repent their sins".

It sounds beyond awful!! Officers were shocked by an even more horrendous discovery. Inside the makeshift church was a naked woman, a machete, several knives and a “ritually sacrificed goat”. Tom, can you imagine the horror?

Luckily, they were able to rescue as many as 15 men, women and children and the suspects are in custody! But how awful!! I can’t imagine what those poor villagers had to go through. Exorcisms are supposed to be a cure, not a death sentence! And this is where the sect went horribly, horribly wrong. To read MORE click HERE
